HOW TO BRIDGE THE GAP?

“From the very beginning of Foster + Partners, our practice was founded on a philosophy of innovation, sustainability and design. We continue to learn from the past and creatively embrace the challenges of the future, with a firm belief that good design makes a difference.” Lord Norman Foster

Foster + Partners has long believed in design being holistic and respectful of the needs of people and planet. A few years ago we published our sustainability manifesto that shows the practice’s ongoing commitment towards achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement. It outlines a holistic sustainable approach, our methodology, which enables us to measure and mitigate the operational and embodied carbon in each of our projects.

The existing certification systems focus on the operational energy which is expended by a building in use, but do not fully address the implications of embodied carbon emissions resulting from the energy required to construct a building and during manufacture. This is a significant challenge. How do we bridge the gap?

Through our latest projects, including the Bench Campus in the Philippines, we hope to illustrate how this method is shaping our approach to architecture and how we seek to close this gap in our designs.
