As an advocate for modern Filipino design, Arch. Royal Pineda of Royal Pineda + strives to encapsulate the essence of the Filipino nation through architecture. He achieves this by blending contemporary styles with traditional Filipino elements. However, the definition of Filipino architecture is questioned. Pineda addresses this by referencing indigenous structures like boat houses and the bahay kubo (stilt houses), which were not architect-designed but built by ordinary Filipinos. Through his work, Pineda seeks to honor these vernacular forms and integrate them into modern architectural discourse, representing the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines.
